| applied area | This standard applies to surge protective devices (SPDs) to protect against surges from the direct or indirect effects of lightning or other transient overvoltages. The surge protective device is designed for connection to the DC side of solar power plants rated up to 1 500 V DC. This device contains at least one nonlinear element and is used to limit surge voltage and divert surge current. Performance characteristics, safety requirements, standard test methods and rated values are identified. SPDs that comply with this standard must be installed only on the DC side of solar generators and on the DC side of inverters. SPDs for PV systems equipped with energy storage devices (e.g. batteries, capacitor banks) were not addressed. SPD (referred to as a 2-port SPD according to IEC 61643-11:2011), which has separate input and output terminals and includes a specific series impedance between these terminals, was not covered. SPDs conforming to this standard are designed to be permanently connected and, therefore, such fixed SPDs can only be disconnected and disconnected using tools. This standard does not apply to portable SPDs. Remark 1 SPDs for PV facilities generally do not include a specific series impedance between input/output terminals in consideration of power efficiency.
