Evolution of Surge Protection Device, SPD is more sophisticated and efficient

Surge Protective Device (SPD) is a device developed to protect electronic devices and power equipment from excessive voltage, and has made many technological advancements. Initially, it was limited to simply blocking excessive voltage, but gradually, various technologies were introduced to provide more sophisticated and efficient protection.

  1. Early Technology : Early surge protectors primarily used metal oxide varistors (MOVs) to absorb transient voltages and discharge them to ground. This technology was simple and effective, but had limited endurance against repeated surges.

  2. Gas Discharge Tube (GDT) : Later, GDT technology was introduced, enabling stable operation at higher voltages. GDT ionizes gas when a surge occurs, discharging the current to ground. Used together with MOV, it provides stronger protection.

  3. Hybrid SPD : Hybrid surge protectors that combine MOV and GDT are widely used today. They utilize the strengths of each to operate effectively over a wider range of voltages and surge conditions.

  4. Smart Technology : Recently, smart surge protectors linked to IoT have emerged, enabling real-time monitoring and remote control. This allows for immediate detection and response to surge situations.

  5. Environmentally friendly design : As part of the development of sustainable technologies, surge protectors are also being developed using recyclable materials and energy-efficient designs.

Advances in surge protectors have contributed significantly to improving the stability and lifespan of electronic devices and power equipment.
