Lightning protection system components (LPSC) - Part 3: Requirements for the insulation discharge gap (ISG)

Korean Industrial Standard KS C IEC 62561-3:2012 (confirmed in 2019)

Lightning protection system components (LPSC) — Part 3: Requirements for isolating spark gaps (ISG)

1 Scope This standard specifies requirements and tests for insulation discharge gap (ISG) for lightning protection systems. ISG is an indirect bonding method used when direct bonding between the lightning protection system and nearby metal objects is not possible for functional reasons.

Typical applications include access to:

• Grounding system of power equipment

• Grounding system of telecommunication system

• Auxiliary earth electrode of voltage-operated ground fault circuit breaker.

• Rail ground electrode of AC and DC rail lines

• Ground electrode for measurement in testing laboratories

• Equipment equipped with cathodic protection and stray current system

• Incoming poles for low-voltage overhead cables

• Insulating bonding of pipes and bypassing of insulating flanges.

This standard does not apply when cascades occur.

NOTE Lightning protection system components (LPSC) may also be suitable for use in hazardous conditions such as fire and explosive atmospheres. When installing lightning protection system components under these conditions, appropriate additional requirements are taken into account.
